| | Singapore is a country of contradictions. A first world economy with many accolades, it is also a country that has little advancement in GLBTQ issues. Homosexuality is still taboo in many circles and homosexual acts are still deemed unnatural and criminalised in the law books. Yet, to many a visitor, it is one of the gayest places on earth.
WOMEN who LOVE WOMEN: Conversations in Singapore, is one of the few documentaries ever made about lesbians in Singapore. Filmed in 2006 by first-time filmmaker Lim May Ling, it uses interview footage with three Singaporean lesbians to get a rare glimpse into lesbian lives in Singapore.
Intimate and often candid, these lesbians share about their lives and loves and their views on topics such as coming out and relationships. Sometimes heartbreaking, and often times, funny, the documentary captures the lives of lesbians who have chosen to live authentically and is a testament to the courage, tenacity and experiences of lesbians living in Singapore.
WOMEN who LOVE WOMEN is not only timely, but also a product of its time - where previously it would be difficult to locate willing interviewees as being filmed would be seen a great personal risk, the willingness of these interviewees reflects not only their courage but also a signalling of the changing views in Singaporean society.
