Guillermo del Toro presents DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, a horror film starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison, directed by Troy Nixey. Based on the 1973 telefilm that del Toro believes is the scariest TV production ever made, the story follows Sally (Madison), a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim her as one of their own.

Having high expectations for this film, I was rather disappointed when it did not deliver. Too many plot holes and a mediocre ending left a lot to be desired. Aside from playing on a few phobias (fear of the dark, the basement), the movie fell flat.

Poorly executed non-horror film with a lot of plot holes. The build up to horror wasn’t as great nor was the climax. It does not help that the creatures can do anything when they wish even outside the dark. Wasted opportunity with gifted actors. 2/5

A mediocre plot with moderate pacing, Nixey goes about with classic scare tactics in this unsatisfactory flick. Holmes shines in her role as the troubled child while Pearce’s presence seems forgotten at times. Not for hardcore horror fans. 3/5
