London 1818: a secret love affair begins between 23 year old English poet, John Keats, and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne, an outspoken student of fashion. This unlikely pair started at odds; he thinking her a stylish minx, she unimpressed by literature in general. It was the illness of Keatss younger brother that drew them together. Keats was touched by Fannys efforts to help and agreed to teach her poetry. By the time Fannys alarmed mother and Keatss best friend Brown realised their attachment, the relationship had an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers were swept into powerful new sensations, I have the feeling as if I were dissolving, Keats wrote to her. Together they rode a wave of romantic obsession that deepened as their troubles mounted. Only Keatss illness proved insurmountable.

"Bright Star" would have been an excellent movie to show to a class of literature students. But as entertainment, it leaves much to be desired. Just some intense love story glorified only by the fact that one is a great poet. Otherwise rather boring.

Campion’s latest period piece can be appreciated on a textual level but her sensitive treatment of Keats’ love affair remains a trifle too refined for mainstream tastes. Visually pleasing, Bright Star’s weak point is Whishaw’s sub-par performance. B-

This flm, like most art and poetry, has to be appreciated by taking a breath, slowing down and opening up your heart to the expression of others. A love story, abeit tragic one sets the backdrop for this cinemagoer’s taste of poetry master class.
