In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp) - the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoovers fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone - from his girlfriend Billie Frechette to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillingers gang - later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi) - thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaws capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger Americas first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing Clark Gable of the FBI.

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals - from the infamous Lady in Red to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti - were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

this shows seems to be very slow and the way Johnny escape from prison is far too easy. Making the show boring. not much action. ending was too easy.

Nostalgia colors, old-school microphones, 30’s costume and settings, all these brought us back to that era of sin and passion. Johnny Depp is as good as usual. The gun-fighting scene in the woods is awesome. A bit too much love in such a "man movie".

The lead actors were great, however, the whole movie lacks depth, i felt. There are still many questions left unanswered. And it seemed there was poor sound quality and mumbled dialogues (could be just me).

Cotillard’s impressive portrayal as the outlaw’s endearing companion brought out the soft side of Depp’s antagonist role. Other characters weren’t as personifiable as they lacked depth. Notably, Bale’s sidekicks exuded great style as veteran agents.

johnny depp is indeed charming in this movie.but i can’t deny that some parts are really boring and long-winded. *yawns* would have fallen asleep if not for depp’s mesmerising acting, hah. sadly, christian bale’s parts weren’t as nice as i thought.

Give a rating of 2.5/5. Movie is dry and draggy. This movie do not need to be 2 hours. I almost fall asleep while watching this movie. Not a good movie to recommend to fellow movie goers. If not for the shooting and action scenes I will rate 1/5.

Mann’s elegant visual touches are obvious in a film that is mostly well-made but falls short of being compelling. More drama than suspense, this gangster biopic humanizes Dillinger without being overtly sentimental in its approach. 8/10.
