The Japanese army invaded Nanking in December of 1937, causing thousands of frightened civilians to flee for their lives. In this gripping drama, Abbot Ji Ran is faced with a severe dilemma: close the gates of the temple (and protect his monks) or open the gates to the fleeing civilians and risk the wrath of the invading Japanese army. Rather than close the gates to protect the temple, Abbot Ji Ran insisted on the Buddhist golden rule in which others always take priority over self, and so he provided the helpless civilians with sanctuary, food, and medicine. With extraordinary courage and compassion, Ji Ran and the monks of Qixia Temple put the welfare of others before their own, saving many lives.
